Major
USEA Initiatives:
Energy
Partnerships
USEA has organized 73 "cooperative partnerships" between U.S. organizations
and counterparts in developing and transitional economies. These
U.S. organizations have conveyed U.S. experiences and business /
regulatory practices to these nations. These relations have been
applauded as one of the
most successful foreign assistance programs ever created. Activities
have been conducted in
Latin America, Africa, Asia, the former Soviet Union and Central
& Eastern Europe. Focus areas have included petroleum exploration, production and transportation,
natural gas distribution, and electric power production,
transmission, distribution and utilization. Practically every aspect of organizational operations
has been addressed in these programs.
National Energy Policy
USEA publishes an annual
statement on national energy policy, which is drafted by
a committee of chief executive officers from a cross section of USEA members. Periodically,
conferences and forums on national energy policy are held
in conjunction with other organizations.
Energy
Efficiency
USEA cosponsors with
Johnson Controls, the Annual Energy Efficiency Forum held
each year in Washington, D.C. at the National Press Club. This forum
has become the single
most important annual policy discussion on energy efficiency. Separately,
USEAs Energy Efficiency Committee meets four times a year to discuss issues of interest to
committee members.
Global
Climate Change
USEA publishes and
distributes the "Handbook for Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions
in Developing Countries." In conjunction with the International
Electric Utility
Partnership Program, USEA supports a fund to provide grants to members conducting feasibility studies
for greenhouse gas reduction projects in developing countries.
USEA sponsors forums and conferences both in the U.S. and in other countries regarding issues
involving global climate change. The USEA Global Climate
Change Committee directs these activities. USEA also coordinates U.S. involvement in World Energy
Council climate change initiatives.
Regulation and Restructuring
USEA prepares the U.S. case
studies and compiles data for WEC studies dealing with
energy industry restructuring. USEA manages cooperative partnerships between U.S. regulatory
commissions and similar agencies in other countries (which are
funded through USEA by the U.S. Government). Through these programs, USEA hosts forums in various
countries several times a year addressing this issue.
Energy Trade
USEAs Energy Trade
Committee monitors trade-related issues. The committee is
comprised of both U.S. Government and private sector individuals and provides an excellent forum to
discuss issues of mutual concern. USEA supports other
industry initiatives to promote open and fair trade practices and
provides U.S. input to
related WEC activities. USEA cooperates closely with the U.S. Department
of Energy, U.S. Department of Commerce, and U.S. Trade Development
Agency to promote exports of energy sector goods and services.
Industry Recognition
The United States Energy Award has been recognized as the premier annual award in which a U.S. industry executive is recognized for leadership andcontributions to the energy industry. USEA, in conjunction with JohnsonControls, also provide four Energy Leadership Awards to public officials. These include the Governor's Award; the Congressional Award; the International Award;
and the Public Service Award.
Training
USEA has conducted training
programs and orientation visits for various countries
in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Agency for International Development,
the U.S. Trade & Development Agency, and the World Bank. Currently,
USEA is organizing a comprehensive business-training program for the
energy sector in Vietnam. USEA is the managing secretariat for the
US-CEE Electricity Management Development Institute.
Conference
Organization
USEA has organized and managed conferences on behalf of the World Energy Council, the World Bank, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Trade Development Agency and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
USEA has also sponsored and cosponsored programs with the Jefferson Energy Foundation, the Edison Electric Institute, Cambridge Energy Research Associates, the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Turkey; the Office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Johnson Controls, Inc., and the Center for Business Intelligence.
