Washington, D.C.—The U.S. Energy Association mourns the death of Former President George H.W. Bush.

In a statement Wednesday on the National Day of Mourning, USEA Executive Director Barry Worthington said:

“The world, not just the U.S., has lost a great leader and an example of courage, patriotism and decency.

“At a time when our nation faces opportunity, yet strife, diversity, yet division, Former President George H.W. Bush has brought us together in unity today. I am saddened it comes on the National Day of Mourning. Our country will feel this loss forever.

“President George H.W. Bush and the entire Bush family has always been a friend and supporter of USEA, our work to increase energy access in developing countries, reduce energy poverty and expand the use of clean energy technology globally. USEA is the U.S. member of the World Energy Council, and I will always be grateful for his keynote to our 17th World Energy Congress in Houston in 1998.

“Former President H.W. Bush has been a champion of energy production, and environmental protection. He drove the creation of and signed the 1990 Clean Air Act and effectively reversed the threat of acid rain. That year he also signed the Global Change Research Act and established the U.S. Global Change Research Program which drives the National Climate Assessment, the most recent of which was released over Thanksgiving.

“Former President George H.W. Bush’s legacy is strong and sustained. We mourn his loss, celebrate his service and offer condolences to the entire Bush family.”
