East Africa Geothermal Partnership (EAGP)

The U.S.-East Africa Geothermal Partnership (EAGP) was established in September 2012 to promote the development of geothermal energy resources and projects in East Africa.  It also encourages and facilitates the involvement of the U.S. geothermal industry in the region.  The EAGP program is a public-private partnership between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Geothermal Energy Association (GEA), and is implemented by the U.S. Energy Association (USEA).  EAGP currently focuses on three priority countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti. 

With an estimated 15,000 MW of potential geothermal capacity in East Africa, geothermal is a clean, reliable, baseload power solution critical to East Africa’s economic development.  As the world leader in geothermal technology and installed capacity, the U.S. geothermal industry can provide quality capacity building, technical assistance and geothermal goods and services needed for East African countries to propel their geothermal markets.


ABOUT POWER AFRICA

EAGP operates in association with President Obama’s Power Africa initiative.  With the goal of doubling access to power in sub-Saharan Africa, Power Africa will use a wide range of U.S. government tools to support investment in Africa’s energy sector.  From policy and regulatory best practices, to pre-feasibility studies and capacity building, to long-term financing, insurance, guarantees, credit enhancements and technical assistance, Power Africa will provide coordinated support to help African partners expand their generation capacity and access.


 CORE PARTNERSHIP ACTIVITIES

  • Foster U.S.-East African business relationship and geothermal power projects
  • Arrange U.S. industry short-term technical advisory support to East African countries
  • Organize capacity building seminars and workshops in East Africa with U.S. geothermal industry and  institutions
  • Track information on East African geothermal resources, projects, events and opportunities

HOW DOES THE PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP WORK?

EAGP aims to catalyze direct working relationships between U.S. and East African geothermal industry representatives, government institutions, regional entities and other stakeholders. EAGP does this through technical assistance, capacity building seminars, meetings and other exchanges.

With support from USAID, GEA, and USEA, EAGP will collaborate with the private sector, regional organizations, international donors and East African institutions to identify immediate geothermal goods and services needs in the Rift Valley region.  EAGP will simultaneously work with U.S. geothermal companies, experts, developers, equipment suppliers and capacity building institutions to facilitate access to opportunities in East Africa’s geothermal sector.

  • Geothermal surface studies
  • Drilling capacity building and advisory support
  • Reservoir testing and modeling
  • Well-field development
  • Power plant design and installation
  • Legal and regulatory frameworks
  • Risk management
  • Project financing
  • Database management
  • Equipment supply

 

In addition to providing short-term advisory assistance to host country institutions, the EAGP will invite East African decision makers to U.S. geothermal events to expose them to the products and services offered by U.S. companies and to foster business partnerships.
